Roughly 113 km and about three and a half hours on a good day. The shortest hill run from Chandigarh, and the one most people do first.
Shimla is the easiest introduction to Himachal from Chandigarh: close enough for a weekend, high enough to feel like you left the plains. The drive is about 113 km and takes three to three and a half hours if you leave before the Kalka bottleneck fills up.
The road to Shimla
Outstation rules apply on this route. NH-5 through Zirakpur, Pinjore and Kalka, then the climb through Solan. The road is tarmac the whole way and in decent condition, but it is genuinely twisty from Kalka onward, so anyone prone to motion sickness should sit in front.
Leave Chandigarh by 7am and you will be parking in Shimla before lunch. Leave at 10am on a Saturday and the same drive can take five hours.
Where to stop on the way
Timber Trail, Parwanoo for the cable car if you have an hour spare. Barog for the tunnel and a quieter tea stop than the highway dhabas. Solan if you want lunch somewhere that is not full of other Chandigarh number plates.

How long does it take to drive from Chandigarh to Shimla?
Three to three and a half hours in normal traffic for roughly 113 km. Leaving before 7am makes a real difference; a late Saturday start can stretch it to five hours.
Which car is best for Chandigarh to Shimla?
A Hyundai Creta at 4,000 rupees a day is the sweet spot, and it is our most-booked car for this route. A hatchback manages it fine too if you are two people with light luggage.
Is the Chandigarh to Shimla road difficult to drive?
It is tarmac the whole way and well maintained, but continuously twisty after Kalka. If you are comfortable on Indian highways you will be comfortable on this.
