Spiti is about 420 km from Chandigarh via Manali, and anyone telling you it is a one-day drive has not done it. Plan two days minimum, with a night in Manali or Jispa, and treat the altitude seriously.

The road to Spiti

Chandigarh to Manali first, then over the Atal Tunnel and the Kunzum Pass into Spiti. The tarmac stops being reliable somewhere after Gramphu; from there it is stone, water crossings and patience.

The valley is realistically open June to September. Outside that window Kunzum closes and the route via Shimla and Kinnaur becomes the only way in, which is longer again.

Where to stop on the way

Outstation rules apply on this route. Jispa or Keylong for the overnight. Chandratal if the road in is open. Kaza as the base, with Key Monastery and Kibber within an easy morning.

Driving there yourself Self-drive cars from ₹1,500 a day

Outstation is allowed on every car in the fleet. Sedans run ₹12–18 per km, SUVs ₹16–24 per km, and we deliver anywhere in the Tricity before you set off.

Driving to Spiti: common questions

Can I drive to Spiti from Chandigarh in a self-drive car?

Yes, and outstation is allowed on every car we rent. But take an SUV: the Scorpio N or the Hilux 4×4 are the two we would actually recommend for this route.

How many days do I need for Chandigarh to Spiti?

Two days each way as a minimum, with a night around Jispa or Keylong. Rushing it is how people end up driving the worst sections after dark.

When is Spiti open from Chandigarh?

Realistically June to September via Manali and Kunzum Pass. Outside that window the route closes and Kinnaur becomes the only approach.

Is a hatchback enough for Spiti?

No. It will physically get there in good conditions, but the water crossings and stone sections past Gramphu are not something to attempt in a low car.
